Mathematics Association for Students Inaugurated

At the instance of MathNED, a new mathematics association for students in Ghana, the Mathematical Community of Ghana (MACOG), was inaugurated recently in KNUST by Professor Jin Akiyama of Tokai University, Tokyo.

A whole day was declared “mathematics day” by the Mathematics Department of KNUST and in attendance were the Vice Chancellor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, some deans and heads of department. Professor Akiyama was in the country as guest of MathNED to give a series of lectures in some of the universities on connecting mathematics to real life. The lectures were organized as part of Ghana’s 50th anniversary celebrations and as part of MathNED’s efforts to revamp mathematics education in Ghana.

The aims of the association include:
• To enhance grass root mobilization of students and to promote interest in the study of mathematics
• To erase the mental barriers associated with the study of mathematics
• To encourage the formation of mathematics clubs in all schools and to organize workshops and seminars for students
• To promote the application of mathematics to Ghana’s developmental efforts
• To identify and nurture mathematical talents among the youth

The pioneer executives of the association were also out-doored. The President is Edmund Kutu-Adu (KNUST), Vice President is Kofi Obiri Yeboah (UCC), General Secretary is Theophilus N. A. Badger (KNUST), Financial Secretary is Selorm Tagbo (UG), Organising Secretary is Eric Baah-Boateng (UDS), Editor is Bennet Seth Jerry (UG), Judicial Committee Chairman is Paapa Yaw Ankomah (KNUST), and Electoral Commissioner is Godwin Sakyi (KNUST). Professor Jin Akiyama is the International Affiliate. The Chief Patron is Professor S. E. Anku and all heads of mathematics departments of all educational institutions in the country are co-opted as patrons.

It is hoped that this association formed by students for students will go a long way to remove the fear of mathematics and popularize the subject among the youth. All students studying or having interest in mathematics in any educational institution in Ghana are invited to become members. The current executives will announce very soon the procedure for membership registration. There is an institutional membership fee of GH¢30 and an annual fee of GH¢20. We need the support of all Ghanaians to make MACOG succeed. Thanks.

-Prof. S.E. Anku
Chief Patron, MACOG
