Formation of Ghana Mathematics Society (GMS)

As part of MathNED’s efforts to revamp mathematics education in Ghana, Professor S. E. Anku, Founder and Executive Director of MathNED, Professor I. K. Dontwi, Head of Mathematics Department of KNUST, Dr. Adu Gyamfi, Head of Mathematics Department of UG, and Professor B. A. Eshun of Department of Science and Mathematics Education of UCC, have initiated the formation of a new association, the Ghana Mathematics Society.

Specifically, the aims include:
• Developing and sustaining a peer-reviewed journal of mathematics and mathematics education
• Nurturing talents in mathematics
• Researching into mathematics and its applications to national education and development
• Forming a think tank to deliberate and set an agenda to systematically direct the technological development of Ghana.
• Collaborating with international mathematics associations on issues of mutual interest
• Organizing and attending international conferences on mathematics and mathematics education
• Providing a pool of experts in mathematics and mathematics education for the country’s universities and other tertiary institutions.

Membership is open to all those who believe in the application of the principles and methods of mathematics to develop Ghana. Mathematics lecturers in the universities, polytechnics, teacher training colleges, and all those who use significant mathematics in their careers are particularly invited to become members. Pre-tertiary mathematics teachers are invited to be members. There is an institutional membership fee of GH¢50 and annual fee of GH¢30. An IMC meeting will take place n the 18th October 2007 at the University of Education, Winneba. More details will be communicated to you through this site.
